What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?
Each moment is an opportunity to practice skillful means. This allows us to prevent relapse into past behaviors that have resulted in non-beneficial outcomes and to select behaviors that permit full engagement in our lives. Mindfulness meditation is the path to achieve these skills.
This course in conscious living is didactic and experiential. The course includes the following: guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle stretching and mindful yoga, individually tailored instruction, inquiry exercises to enhance awareness in everyday life, group dialogue, daily home assignments, and a set of four CDs to facilitate your practice at home.
There have been a number of research studies that support the efficacy of MBSR on reducing medical and psychological symptoms across a wide range of medical diagnoses, including
various chronic pain conditions.
Who should take the course?
Most people can benefit from learning to live in the here and now. People take the course for diverse reasons which include, but are not limited to, stress (job, family or financial), chronic pain and illness, anxiety and panic, recurrent depression, GI distress, sleep disturbances, fatigue, high blood pressure and headaches.
People are sent to the course by their doctors, therapists or they are self-referred. Many enroll because, although they are feeling well physically, they say the pace of their lives is “out of control.”
